Ingredients:

  • 1 lb of beef (sirloin or ribeye), thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup of soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup of brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup of mirin (Japanese sweet rice wine)
  • 1/4 cup of sesame oil
  • 1/4 cup of chopped green onions
  • 1 tbsp of minced garlic
  • 1 tbsp of grated ginger
  • 1 tbsp of sesame seeds
  • 1/2 tsp of black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp of red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1/2 onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 carrot, thinly sliced
  • 4-5 shiitake mushrooms, thinly sliced
  • Vegetable oil for cooking
  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together soy sauce, brown sugar, mirin, sesame oil, green onions, garlic, ginger, sesame seeds, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using) until well combined.

  2. Add the thinly sliced beef into the marinade, making sure that every piece is fully coated. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight.

  3. In a large skillet or wok, heat some vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the sliced onion, carrot, and shiitake mushrooms, and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until slightly softened.

  4. Remove the vegetables from the skillet and set them aside on a plate.

  5. In the same skillet, add the marinated beef and cook for 3-4 minutes until browned and cooked through.
